I agree with Hal Erickson's pinwheel comment. Although my connection speed has increased, it has become much more difficult to stream movies than it was when I had a slower connection. This applies to both the old and new players.

Your new screen still refuses to download on most films. Sometimes I'm lucky, other times it's just the pinwheel. This is true on three different computers of varying ages.
If you are going to replace the "old" screen, would you please do SOMETHING to upgrade the streaming capacity of the new one? And going to an "alternate" server is no good either. If the picture isn't too small, it's nonexistent.

hmm, this shouldn't be the case.

and the old player is much better than the new player?
(i'm wondering about general network/server reponsiveness issues on our end as opposed to the A/V player at all).

also, think I mentioned in another post, but there is a new
"I prefer flash" link at the bottom of the new player that you can try
to see if the behaviour is any better/different...

Can you tell me where the 'I prefer Flash' link is located on the new player, please?

All I have on mine is a toolbar full of enigmatic icons.

Thanks.

if you don't see it, you're likely using:
iOS, IE7, or IE8

you can verify by right-clicking over the playing media
and if a flash menu comes up -- you're already "preferring" flash
in that browser (so we aren't showing that link).

my bad for not remembering that the link wouldn't always show
if you are in a situation that is now always already using flash (only).

Errr...funny enough, no.

When I try to play some streams, all I get is the pinwheel, but downloads seem to work ok.

Thanks.

ps: while I'm revising, I'd like to point out a small gripe....when I submit a revised post, a screen tells me that I'll be returned to the previous page shortly. I then get returned to the edit post page. Surely, the best thing would be, to be returned to the revised post, showing the edits I've made. Just a small gripe !!

Thanks again.

i changed the minimum prebuffer time from 1 second to 5 seconds about a week ago. i'd be curious if it makes things any better for you, with respect to the number of "pinwheels". i think they could likely pinwheel longer, but hopefully when it stops things play more consistently for you.

or, were you saying the pinwheels never ever stopped at all for you?

Hi, Tracey,

It only seems to fail on certain files.....usually films that have been converted from video to digital, and then posted and converted on IA. It never fails on stuff that has been posted without an 'analog' stage...eg 'DVD rips',
etc. I don't think IA is at fault, here....it's happened too many times on similar items...I'm more inclined to think that the 'items' may be the problem.

Maybe an obscure compressor issue ?

Thanks for your help,

rabid47

ah, yes!

indeed that sounds *precisely* like it was an uploaded .mp4
file that doesn't have the "moov atom" at the front of the file, but at the end.
nearly all default mp4 makers will write the keyframe information at the end of the file, and one has to be diligent to make sure to rewrite the .mp4 after the transcoding is done to put the "moov atom" at the front.

"qt-faststart" is a great little utility/fixer part of the "ffmpeg" package (both of which we use here when we make our .mp4).

so yah, unfortunately, we've felt reticent to modify an uploader's "source" .mp4 files and rewrite the atoms for them, for when they're at the end of their .mp4.

we're still kinda trying to figure out what to do for these cases...

1. Could'nt log in..
2. Could log in, but not post, as I was'nt logged in...huh???
3. Could post, but not read as 'no forum selected for posting'.
4. Had to post twice before the post was visible.

And it still took me back to the 'Edit Post' page...LOL !!

(I have'nt had the courage to tackle the 'pinwheel' problem yet...((Just tried it now....still 'wheeling', I'm afraid))..).

No worries.....thanks for trying, anyhow....appreciated. :-)
